Harmony Remotes and IFTTT
I spent a lot of time trying to glean more information about how the Harmony remotes interface with IFTTT. I read anything I could find, posted multiple times on the forums, even called customer support but didn’t find an answer. So I determined I would try it out myself and find out the info for myself.
The simple answer is that any hub based remotes on your Harmony account (as of January 2016 anyway) will be available to use with IFTTT. The little bit of information I did find wasn’t clear about which remotes would work as it stressed that only “Harmony Home products” were compatible. However, with the updates/upgrades that Logitech issued last year which makes all of the hub based products compatible with home automation devices, the functionality to integrate with IFTTT was also expanded to these devices. I have both a Harmony Home Hub and the previous generation Harmony Ultimate Hub *both* successfully connected to IFTTT simultaneously. The information about how to setup recipes in IFTTT was also very poor. The sketchy details explained that it would require trial and error to determine which of a user’s hub a given recipe was controlling. This sounded like it would be extremely confusing whereas in practice, it’s much more straightforward. When setting up a recipe, IFTTT gives you clear choices for which activity you want the Harmony to perform and also which hub that activity is controlling. In the end, what in theory sounds very confusing and difficult to setup, in practice is quite simple. So, enjoy connecting up your life!
